Southwest Finland Emergency Services Opens in a new windowhas an operational area of nearly 29 000 square kilometres comprising 16 500 square kilometres of sea and over 10 000 islands. The majority of inhabitants, totalling almost 500 000, speak Finnish as their first language and approximately 6 % speak Swedish.
Since 2004 the rescue services in Finland have been divided into 22 rescue regions. Southwest Finland Emergency Services is responsible for a province on the coast of the Archipelago Sea. The province includes 28 municipalities and a large archipelago. In all there are 81 fire stations in the region, eleven of which are manned 24 hours, three 8 hour stations and the remaining 67, are volunteer fire stations.
The basic function of every rescue service in Finland is to save and protect people, animals and property, prevent accidents and to promote safety. Every year over 8300 rescue missions are performed by Southwest Emergency Services and part of the rescue personnel participate in international rescue operations. The prevention of accidents and promotion of safety in varying ways are an important element of the daily work of the Southwest Emergency Services.
Southwest Emergency Services also handles medical response in several cities in the region. 14 ambulances and one medical leader unit are on duty around the clock. They have about 100 missions per day.
