The Emergency Services College (ESC) Opens in a new window, situated in Kuopio, Finland, provides education and training under the supervision of the Ministry of the Interior. The College provides basic vocational training and further training in rescue services including emergency response centre dispatchers. In addition, the College provides courses and consultancy in preparedness training for disturbances in normal conditions and emergency conditions as well as for international emergency and civil crisis management tasks.
The Research and Development Unit at the Emergency Services College is responsible for the coordination of the research activities Opens in a new windowof the rescue services in Finland. Included in the tasks of the unit are: analysis of research needs; collection of information by following studies made and by summarizing research and development programmes in Finland and abroad; independent development and implementation of studies; and development and implementation of studies in cooperation with other research institutes. The Research and Development Unit employs 10 full-time employees. Moreover, about 10-20 persons take part in the research and development programmes every year.
The Emergency Services College also administers the commissioned tasks of the Finnish Fire Research Board.
